The Gift of Snow
Today there were snowflakes on my windshield and as an adopted Texan it was a bit of a surprise. While I don’t like snow to impede my traveling, I love the effect of snow, the beauty only a couple inches of snow that covers up the ugly dying grass and leafless bushes. This is why the snow reminds me of forgiveness.

In a Bible study of which I participate, we are studying the book of John. In John 4:23-24 says, "But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." (NKJV). What does this mean? What does this mean to you? What does this mean to me? Read more...

Let's reflect a moment on the resurrection of Jesus after His crucifixion. It was our transgressions which He bore on the cross - from which we may be cleansed through His wonderful gift of love. As we surrender to Him and His purpose, His tenderness and love are on full display. All one must do is to "be still and know that I am God" (Ps. 46:10). Read more...

May was such a full month! Graduations, proms, auditions here at the theatre, retirement ceremonies, all manner of events. Amongst all the tumult of this month, I have had recent experiences which underscore to me three things: 1) God does things in his own time; 2) I have a responsibility to my own spiritual health which is independent of the way I think the world is treating me; 3) God is indeed good to us, no matter what it seems like at the time. Read more...

Stop and See the Bluebonnets
The first year I lived in Texas, I had a departing flight from Austin on the first weekend in April. I saw a couple of bluebonnet patches on the drive to the airport, but what I saw from the air was amazing. Now 27 years later I still remember looking from my window as the plane took flight and seeing fields and more fields of blue. It was astounding how many bluebonnets existed in places where no one lived and only those who took the time to look out the plane window could really enjoy them. From that moment I understood why bluebonnets are the Texas state flower. Read more...

Have you figured out what the "buzz word" is for 2009? If you haven’t gleaned from the title, "CHANGE", will definitely go down in history as the most talked about item, not only in the recently held elections, but also as we move forward into 2009. Now don’t get hung up on the word change, because the verbiage will "change" form as we move through this year. You will hear the word "REFORM" or "REFORMATION", or maybe even "STIMULATE" as we get into specific areas of interest, but the underlying theme of change will remain constant. Read more...

In January 1, 1999 I was routinely packing the Christmas decorations when I realized I was exhausted and had no memory of any pleasure for the past several weeks. I allowed my life to become overly busy. I had not read a single Christmas card, nor had I mailed any. I was actually so busy with volunteering at Christmas programs for school and church, making sure everyone had a gift, baking for parties, and doing what was expected, that I missed out on the joy. ...Read more

No More Running

Friday, September 19th, 6:00 a.m. seemed like it would be an ordinary day. My son Kyle and I were 4 weeks into our training program in preparation for the White Rock Marathon in Dallas. Today would be a 10K run, 6.2 miles. It should take about an hour, no sweat. Turns out I had a terrible run like none before or since. Halfway through my stomach felt empty, my legs stiff, I started to doubt if I could make it. - Read more

School will be starting soon - cue the collective groans from children everywhere and the big sighs from their parents. I have been an elementary school teacher for 26 years and have had the pleasure of meeting and working with lots of wonderful parents who did many wonderful things for me. It's simple…I've gotten over the shock of cold weather, come to grips with my credit card bill (which merely reflects my generosity over the Christmas holidays), and I’ve forgotten all those New Year’s resolutions that I gave up on early in January!

February is like starting afresh. It can be, but isn’t it all just another day? As I reflect on the many things I went through this year, I give God all the glory, honor, and praise.
Christmas Shopping

I love to shop. Put me in the vicinity of a mall or strip mall and I am ready to inspect the stores. So when Christmas comes around, I am in my element. One of my greatest pleasures is finding the perfect gift for my family and friends. Discovering unique stocking stuffers for my daughters, finding a great jacket for my mom, and locating a new pair of shoes can really make my day.

Then in the quiet moments of my life I am reminded of God's gifts, gifts that are not purchased at shopping malls. Still He is generous with his love and blessings, gifts far greater than money can buy. The Father's gifts are given without expectations, yet I feel I should express my pleasure in his gifts. But how do you give a gift to God? - Read more

"Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good." - 1 Chronicles 16:32 NLT

"Not only do we have a lot to be thankful for, our thankfulness can accomplish much." - John Fischer

It’s November again. Where did 2007 go? Pretty soon it will be Thanksgiving and then it’s downhill until Christmas. Thanksgiving is the traditional time of the year to give thanks for all of the good things in our lives (and also to be with family members, eat lots of food, and watch football games on television).

All Christians should delight in being thankful. We should walk around in awe of the sacrifice Jesus made for us so that we could be a part of His kingdom. Sometimes we get too bogged down in the daily grind of life to purposefully think of being thankful. If we wake up in the morning, that alone should be enough to start us on a thankful pattern for the day. Read more

In July I was able to witness and experience another miracle from God in a certain situation I had to endure. Almost four years ago, I began the process of probating my mother's will. Not having done this before, I was not sure of what to expect, but I knew this was going to be a great battle between my siblings and myself because of the lack of God in their lives. I had to place my faith in God. I also knew that I had to surrender all (anything having to do with the will and probate) to Him and truly give Him total control. I had to "let go and let God." This was going to be hard, but what I wanted most of all was Peace and that comes only from God. Matthew 17:20, 21 came to mind. Jesus answered, "You were not able to drive out the demon because your faith is too small. I tell you the truth. If your faith is as big as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, "Move from here to there," and the mountain will move. All things will be possible for you." (Internationals Children's Bible). Read more

Several years ago, a friend introduced me to container gardening. She helped me find the containers, told me what flowers needed the least amount of care, and showed me how to use the right soil to grow flowers. I was not really excited about it, but I thought… I can do it one summer. Now when spring rolls around I look forward to picking out the plants, getting my hands dirty, and then watching the flowers grow through the summer. Read more

Words of Wisdom

Recently my 16-year old son and I headed outdoors in the late morning for a 5k run together. As it has been one of the wettest summers in Central Texas history, we knew the humid air would consume us as soon as we opened the door. We were right. And as a bonus, the heat radiating off the payment complimented the thick air around us quite nicely. Read more

Darla* is the smallest adult I ever met. She told me she'd lived in Killeen since October, but until her accident she felt she had no friends. As I handed her a Wal-mart gift card from the Live it Foundation, her faced glowed with a warm smile. She said, "I am so thankful for the help, but I can’t believe how many people care about me. This is the first time I have not felt alone." Read more

A Devotional from On the Right Note

Have you heard about the frog that was born at the bottom of a well? He thought life couldn't get any better till one day he looked up and saw daylight. Climbing up to investigate he was amazed to find a much larger pond than the one he lived in. And going further afield he discovered a lake that was bigger still. When eventually he came to the ocean and all he could see was water, it dawned on him just how limited his thinking had been. He thought everything he needed was down in the well, but that was a drop in the bucket compared to the things that were out there for him to enjoy. Read more

"I’ll never run." That's what I would tell my husband; "I'll walk for as long as you want, but I'll never run." I’m happy to say that was many miles ago. In December of last year, I began training to run my first half marathon. You might think that "my" training, only involved me, myself and I. But, that would be incorrect. Besides studying my training instructions, reading Runner’s World magazine and feeling inspired by the knowledge logged by those who had gone before me, I also counted on encouragement from my friends and family. It’s always nice to know that someone believes in you; someone is counting on you to accomplish your goal. Even so, there were days that my confidence waned and I completely doubted my abilities. "Can I really do this? Am I ready to run this far?" I queried my inner strength and could not find the answer. Read more

The "great American pastime" has been a major passion with young and old alike in our great land for well over a century. Much comment has surrounded baseball from all sides including the seasonal resurgence in springtime. A thought often expressed by "aficionados" of baseball goes something like the following: "Simply playing the game is not nearly so significant as the way in which the game is played." Following this thought pattern is the prayer recorded by an unknown author who obviously knew and loved the "great American pastime".

We all have our own definitions of love. One of mine involves staying in a warm bed on a freezing morning as my husband gets up and heads outside to take care of MY horses. He cares about me enough to let me stay comfortably inside…a totally unselfish expression of his love. In fact, when most people think about love, it probably involves action of some sort. You can speak words of love, but without action, there is no proof.
